Feeling unhappy in marriage can be heartbreaking and confusing, especially as a Christian. You may wonder, "Is this what God wants for me?" or "How do I honor God when my heart feels heavy?" If you're asking these questions, you're not alone. Let's walk through biblical principles from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible to find hope, healing, and direction.

What to Do If You’re Unhappy in Marriage | Biblical Guidance for Restoration
What to Do If You’re Unhappy in Marriage | Biblical Guidance for Restoration

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings, But Don’t Be Ruled By Them

It's okay to admit you're struggling. Even David cried out to God in distress. "I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long." (Psalm 38:6, KJV). God cares about your pain. Bring your honest feelings before Him in prayer. However, do not let emotions drive decisions that could damage your covenant.

Action Step: Spend time daily pouring your heart out to God in prayer and journaling. Ask Him to give you clarity and peace.

2. Choose Love Daily

Love is more than a feeling, it's a choice and an action. "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up." (1 Corinthians 13:4, KJV). God calls us to extend love even when it's hard. That doesn't mean ignoring problems, but it does mean showing kindness, patience, and grace.

Action Step: Make small, intentional choices to show love today, a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or simply listening.

3. Seek Wise and Godly Counsel

You were never meant to bear this alone. "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." (Proverbs 11:14, KJV). Seeking godly counsel through a trusted pastor, biblical marriage counselor, or a mature believer can provide perspective and biblical advice.

Action Step: Reach out to someone you trust spiritually and share your struggles.

4. Examine Yourself First

Jesus teaches us to look inward before pointing fingers. "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" (Matthew 7:3, KJV). Self-reflection and repentance are key parts of healing any relationship.

Action Step: Pray and ask God to reveal any areas in your heart that need healing or change.

5. Commit to Prayer and Fasting

There is power in seeking God earnestly. "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." (Matthew 17:21, KJV). Pray for your spouse, your marriage, and for God to soften both your hearts.

Action Step: Set aside regular times to fast and pray specifically for your marriage.

6. Trust God's Timing and Plan

Sometimes God allows seasons of hardship to refine us. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28, KJV). He has a plan, even in the midst of pain.

Action Step: Surrender your timeline and trust God to work in His perfect timing.

There is Hope in Christ

Being unhappy in marriage does not mean you are hopeless. God specializes in restoring broken things—including hearts and marriages. As you seek Him through prayer, love, counsel, self-examination, and trust, believe that He is working behind the scenes. "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26, KJV). If you're struggling right now, take the first step today. Bow your head and invite the Lord into your marriage. You are not walking this journey alone He is right beside you, ready to guide you every step of the way.
